Spring is here. Let's garden! Given the many available options of trees and shrubs, deciding what to grow can be overwhelming. Which ones are “best” and which ones should be avoided? Do you go completely native or are some non-native plants okay?

In this talk, Alison Arnold will share ideas on how to choose, plant and care for a selection of native and non-native trees and shrubs that grow well in our region. Plan to join us on Saturday, March 23, from 10:30 to 12 pm at MindSpring Consulting for this free presentation from a local expert.

Alison has more than 30 years of public horticulture experience. She is the Agriculture Extension Agent in Consumer Horticulture at the NC Cooperative Extension in Buncombe County and is responsible for education outreach, as well as training and coordination of the Extension Master Gardener Volunteer program.

This is one of several gardening programs that HCCA is hosting for our community this spring. Registration is not required but is encouraged as it helps us plan for a successful event.

Every property owner in Buncombe County will receive a new assessed value on January 1, 2025. You’re probably thinking, “Great, my taxes are going up.” But the overall goal of the reappraisal process is to assure equity and fairness by making assessments more uniform across the County.

Join us on Thursday, March 28, 6:00 pm at the Library to hear from key representatives of the Buncombe County Property Assessor’s office: Keith Miller, Buncombe County Tax Assessor, Rebeca Stroud, Administrative Coordinator, and Bobbette Mays, Public Relations Coordinator. They will explain the reappraisal process and how you can ensure that your property value reflects fair market value.

Why do this now when it doesn’t go into effect until next January? So that you will have plenty of time to apply for tax relief if you are eligible, update your property record, or gather information if you need to appeal your assessed value.

Reappraisal is coming so make sure you are prepared and educated. Learn about reappraisal, what it is, what it means, and how to appeal if you are unhappy with the 2025 appraisal.

Registration is not required but is encouraged as it helps us plan for a successful event.

The awards ceremony for the 5K race will take place at approximately 10:15 am near the finish area. Special prizes will be presented to the top three overall male and female and top masters (40 and over) male and female. Awards will be given to the top 3 male and female finishers in various age groups, including 12 and under.

A race like this doesn’t happen without volunteers. If you would like to be part of this event and be there for the runners and walkers, please sign up for one of the available spots.
