A Statement on the Death of George Floyd and a Call to End Racial Injustice

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”

― The RevMartin Luther King Jr., Letter from the Birmingham Jail, 16 April, 1963

Those prophetic and inspiring words written more than 57 years ring even more true and more loudly, following the death of George Floyd and the subsequent events during the past two weeks. Hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world and from all walks of life came together to peacefully protest the injustice anywhere and demand justice everywhere.

They came to downtown Asheville, to Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C., to Parliament Square in London, to Town Hall in Sydney, Australia. They evoked the name of George Floyd, chanted “silence is violence”, “black is no crime”, “no justice, no peace”.

It is a mistake to think that the injustice so disturbingly administered to George Floyd in Minneapolis has no bearing on the residents of the Haw Creek community. If we don’t cry out against injustice and racism anywhere, we are doomed to live in a society where there is no justice for anyone.

The Haw Creek Community Association Board of Directors is asking members of the Haw Creek Community Association and residents throughout Haw Creek to join us in condemning injustice and racism, in supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, and in promoting better understanding and equality for all people.

This is an extraordinary time. It is our duty to join the millions of people worldwide in making our voices heard. In doing so, we are making our community a better place to live.
