It’s been a busy winter at Haw Creek Elementary School. We just concluded a school wide penny drive to raise money towards getting new swings on our playground. Lots of students raided their piggybanks to contribute to this worthwhile cause. We still have a little more fundraising to do but we hope to get the swings in the ground this spring!
Our Destination Imagination team won first place in their division at the recent state championship. Destination Imagination is a challenge event where students work as a team to solve problems using logic and creativity. The Haw Creek team will be heading to the Global Finals in Knoxville in May. We are very proud of their hard work.
Coming up this spring at Haw Creek Elementary will be our annual plant sale. Always held on the Friday before Mother’s Day (this year the date is Friday, May 11th) we sell seedlings and sprouts great for your garden plus potted plants. The hours are 8-3 in the lower parking lot off of Bethesda road. Hope to see you there!
Finally, as the days start getting warmer, we wanted to remind everyone of the beautiful walking trails on the Haw Creek Elementary campus. Refurbished last year by the Blue Ridge Parkway foundation, they are fun and easy for everyone to walk. Kids love the science experiment stations that are located at intervals along the path. Keep your eyes peeled, it’s also a favorite place to hide painted rocks for others to find! We welcome the community to share this wonderful resource with us during the hours that school is not in session. The Trailhead is up the driveway from Trinity Chapel Road. Please bring bags to clean up after your dogs to keep the trails clean and healthy for all of us.

It was such an honor to be elected president of the Haw Creek Community Association at the annual meeting in early March. You elected twelve committed and passionate volunteers to advocate for our community and we look forward to hitting the ground running.
While walking to the library the other day, I was reminded once again of the beauty of our valley as I passed by blooming cherry trees, forsythia, and daffodils. Whether you’ve lived here for five days or 50 years, you know what a special place Haw Creek is.
For over 20 years, the Haw Creek Community Association has been committed to protecting and promoting the interests of the overall Haw Creek neighborhood. Through regular newsletters, social events, and volunteer opportunities, we work to bring the entire Haw Creek community together. We also maintain an open dialogue with city and county officials to advocate for our neighborhood’s interests.
We have a full calendar of events for the year, including our first community-wide yard sale on April 21. We need volunteers to help with events and on other priorities. If you’re interested in getting involved, please email us. If we all contribute a little of our time and talents, think of the impact we can have on our community.
As you drive home this evening, I encourage you to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the place we call home and think about how you can make a difference in our neighborhood this year.
Thank you again for this awesome privilege and I look forward to hearing from you. You can reach me by email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Our next newsletter will go out in early April outlining the upcoming events and HCCA priorities.
See you around the neighborhood,
PS- Have you liked us on Facebook yet? It’s a great way to stay up-to-date with what’s happening around the neighborhood.A L
Haw Creek Commons Garden workdays are every Tuesday and Thursday morning to garden between 10:00am-11:30am (winter hours that will change when it warms.) We will begin next week and continue through till next winter.
No garden experience is necessary and volunteers gain access to as much produce as they will use (as it’s harvested.)
Excess is donated to Manna Food Bank, Haywood Street Congregation for their weekly meals for the homeless, and used for groups at Haw Creek Commons. For more information contact:

The Haw Creek Elementary PTA is running a Penny Drive to raise money for new swings for the playgrounds.
Friday, March 16th is the last day to contribute pennies and other coins or even bills.
This is a great chance to get rid of that coffee can of change AND donate to a great cause!
Any change brought to the office at Haw Creek Elementary will be put towards the swing set fund.
