Our home here in the southern Blue Ridge is one of the most biologically diverse ecoregions in the world, containing an abundance of different wildflower species. The wildflowers that bloom in the spring, before the trees leaf-out, are called “spring ephemerals” and are most beautiful.  Join us for a hike where you will learn the habitats and identity of these wonderful natural neighbors.

Long-time Haw Creek resident Bernard Arghiere is offering 4 opportunities to hike and learn about the local wildflowers. Participation is limited to 12 people per hike, so register today for one of these educational hikes.

Masters Park to Haw Creek Overlook*

This will be about a 2.5 mile hike roundtrip, starting at the Masters Park parking lot on Maple Drive parking and hiking through Masters Park up to the Mountains-to-Sea and the “overlook” rock area.  View all of the wildflowers seen on this trail. This hike will be offered twice:

Thursday, April 18th - 10:00 am    Register Here

Friday, April 19th -  10:00 am  *ALL SLOTS FULL*

Mountains-to-Sea Trail to Tanbark Ridge Overlook*

This will be about a 3.5 mile hike one-way (we will carpool and shuttle back to the starting point). The hike will start at the Mountains-to-Sea Trail above Sondley, hiking north on the trail until reaching the Tanbark Ridge overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This hike promises to provide some spectacular diversity of wildflower species – last year there were over 75 different flowering species on this route, including three different native orchids. This hike will be offered twice:

Friday, April 26th - 10:00 am  Register Here

Saturday, April 27th - 10:00 am  Register Here

*Please note the following information for all hikes:

    • All the hikes require some fitness, as there is significant climbing and rough terrain.
    • Please dress appropriately and bring your own water bottle.
    • These events are free but you must register so that we can contact you.
    • In the event the weather takes a turn for the worse, we will send an email by 9:00 pm the night before postponing the hike.
    • Participation is limited to 12 people per hike.

    UPDATE: RESCHEDULED TO JUNE 11!

Seeking more time to respond to the objections of the Haw Creek community and City leaders, developer Kevin Jackson has pulled consideration of the ‘Meadows at Haw Creek’ development from the April 23 City Council agenda. Instead, the public hearing and vote has been rescheduled for Tuesday, June 11, when this matter will come back to City Council.

On this day City Council will vote on the proposed rezoning for the property at 767 New Haw Creek Road. The rezoning will allow the "Meadows at Haw Creek" to proceed if approved.

This City Council meeting will be a critical moment of this months-long campaign. Your presence is vital and will help demonstrate the depth of concern Haw Creek residents feel. As you did on March 20 when 400 Haw Creek residents attended the Planning & Zoning hearing, we need you there for this City Council vote!

This meeting will also be held at Harrah’s Cherokee Center Banquet Hall, 87 Haywood Road, beginning at 5:00 pm.

This meeting is open to public comment with the below limitations.

    • APPLICANTS HAVE UP TO TEN MINUTES TO COMPLETE A PRESENTATION.
    • INDIVIDUALS HAVE UP TO THREE MINUTES TO SPEAK TO CITY COUNCIL.
    • A PERSON REPRESENTING A GROUP OF THREE OR MORE PERSONS (SPEAKER PLUS THREE OTHERS – TOAL OF FOUR) PRESENT IN THE COUNCIL CHAMBER HAS UP TO 10 MINUTES TO ADDRESS CITY COUNCIL.
    • PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD FOR ANY ITEM MAY NOT EXCEED ONE HOUR
